English Language Skills Training

ELST was initiated few years back by ENVISION to impart the basic tools of effective communication skills in English for young Tibetans to communicate better inorder to ensure their acceptance in social and professional circle. Moreover English language commanding worldly usage, the need for efficiency in this language has become indispensable. Hence in collaboration with Cambridge, every year available volunteers used to teach for almost a month long.

This year in absence of any available volunteers from Cambridge, Ms Rohini Mehta, a TEFL accredited with interior designing as profession was assigned with this programme, also has rich experience of teaching English wide across the globe. With Ritinjali, an NGO based in Delhi, she taught English to some of the students, namely from Thailand, Bhutan, India and few Tibetans too. On consideration for modest amount she volunteered to teach for the three weeks programme in Tibetan youth hostel in Delhi scheduled from 26 October to 13 November excluding Saturdays and Sundays in between.

The programme titled Business English Communication Skills (BECS), a part of ELST, basically covered the important aspects of employability. Beside this the basics of effective communication skills were imparted innovatively. Project based assignments were given both to the individuals and groups. While the individual project exposed the participants to the effective approaches for getting preferred job, the group project had a debate competition with a topic for each group and had both the for and against motions within respective group to be presented on the final day of the programme.

A written test of Cambridge module was conducted to benchmark their command over the language. Exercises on improvement in verbal communication were carried out frequently. For instance calling out names loudly from a distant, reading out scripts, presentation on topics assigned and role play were all carried out during the week to nurture the practice of confident communication. In between the programme, outdoor activities like playing basketball, enacting roles, and verbal communication exercises were done to maintain the interest for the course. Even daily practices of social etiquettes were practiced frequently to not only generate acceptance in the social circle but to enhance confidence while communicating in English.

One the second last day of the programme the presentations of individual project were done with powerpoint facility. The project served their purpose of having better information on getting their job. For many the whole exercise was an exploration for them.

The last day sequenced the debate competition firstly with each group debating on the topics assigned at the initial day of the programme. Followed by this was a group song, heal the world, presented by the participants. Next Tenzin and Penpa of T Boys, an upcoming dance group and the former students of Ms Rohini during her programme with Ritinjali, amused the audience with their sophisticated dance show.

All the participants were awarded certificates for successfully completing the programme. 15 students benefited from this programme and expressed their gratitude for having this programme here in the hostel. They felt that they have now overcome their inhibitions to great extent and felt more confident in using the tools as taught in the programme.

With a vote of thanks from Envision staff, the programme concluded with lots enthusiasm and inputs throughout all the sessions carried out in it.
