Panjab University (PU) is one of the oldest universities in the country. It was established in 1882 at Lahore in Pakistan and after partition shifted to Chandigarh in 1947. The university campus was designed by Pierre Jeanerette under the watchful eye of legendary Le Corbusier, the architect of Chandigarh.
This university, with a 5 star grading by National Assessment & Accreditation Council, has more than 173 affiliated colleges. Its main campus is spread over 550 acres and has a health centre, a sports complex and hostels.
The Central AC Joshi Library here stocks over 6.9 lakh books and periodicals. The library has been recognized as one of the six national centres for data distribution by the UGC.
PU offers courses in almost all the streams in sciences, humanities engineering and business. While for some courses it conducts entrance exams, most admissions are done on the basis of class XII marks. The admission process will begin by June

For commerce: Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatam Dharama College (SD) is one of the best institutes in the region for business studies. The college claims to be the only one in the country to offer 26 career-oriented add-on courses. It has been accredited as a star college by the Union government’s department of science & biotechnology.

For science: DAV College in Sector-10, Chandigarh, is often the most sought after by those wishing to pursue graduation in science subjects. The college has been awarded A+ Grade by NAAC, and has been declared ‘model college’ by the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) and one having ‘potential for excellence’ by Panjab University.

For humanities: Both DAV College and SD College offer a number of courses in humanities with fairly high standards of teaching. Other city colleges where students can walk in for courses in humanities are GCG (for girls) and Khalsa College.
For law: For those wishing to study law, Panjab University is a good option.

UNIVERSITY INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY (UIET)
UIET offers BE in biotechnology, computer science & engineering, electrical & electronics engineering, electronics & communication engineering, information technology and mechanical engineering. Integrated five-year courses in BE with MBA are also available here. There are 106 seats available in computer science & engineering, electronics & communication engineering and information technology, whereas 76 seats are available in rest of the courses
PUNJAB ENGINEERING COLLEGE
Punjab Engineering College (PEC) in Chandigarh was recently upgraded to a deemed university. Renowned astronaut Kalpana Chawla and satirist Jaspal Bhatti are some of its famous alumni. The most popular courses offered by PEC are BE in computer engineering, electronics and electrical communication, information technology, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Except for computer engineering and IT, where 30 seats are available, other courses offer 60 seats each.
The admissions to these two colleges are through rankings of AIEEE conducted by CBSE. For admission to BE courses in UIET, aspirants must have qualified in the AIEEE as well as have passed 10+2 or its equivalent examination with at least 60% marks in aggregate (55% marks in case of SC/ST/Physically Challenged), conducted by a recognized board/ university/council. There are no reserved seats for Chandigarh students

Home to some of the finest academic institutions in the country, Pune is often described as the ‘Oxford of the East’. Students constitute almost half-amillion of the city’s four million population. Besides University of Pune (UoP), the city has six deemed universities, Symbiosis International University (SIU) and Bharati Vidyapeeth University (BVU) being the prominent ones, offering a range of popular courses

Pune city accounts for 266 of the affiliated colleges of UoP. While admissions to engineering, health sciences and pharmacy are subject to a centralised process based on the combined common entrance test (MHT-CET), the degree seats in conventional arts, science and commerce studies are filled through merit-based system at the institution level.
Quota: A Maharashtra government rule mandates universities to make a provision of 10% quota for admission to students from outside Maharashtra.

Commerce: BBA, BCA and business management — international business are among the popular academic courses under the commerce faculty. Varsity conducts a CET for these courses with an intake of 13,000 — the first such test is slated for May 31. Brihan Maharashtra College of Commerce (BMCC), Garware College of Commerce (GCC), Symbiosis and Modern colleges are the leading institutions for commerce studies
Science & Arts: The Institute of Bioinformatics and Biotechology’s (IBB) integrated five-year MSc and six-year MTech in biotechnology courses, are the only academic programmes that are offered on campus for Class XII pass students. Admissions to these programmes, which have an intake of 30 each, are through a national level entrance test to be held on June 14. The BSc course is usually seen as the last resort by students. Fergusson College offers vocational science degree programmes in areas like electronic equipment, physics with photography and vocational biotechnology, for Std XII passouts. The sought-after colleges for arts and science studies are Fergusson College, Sir Parsurambhau (SP) College, Abashaeb Garware College, Modern College, Nowrosjee Wadia College and St Mira’s College for Girls
Law: For legal studies, the Indian Law Society’s (ILS) Law College, a NAAC ‘A+’ grade institution that ranks among the best in India, offers a five-year law degree programme, bachelor of socio-legal science (BSL-LLB). Three CJIs, a number of chief justices, governors and jurists are its alumni
SYMBIOSIS INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY
Symbiosis was established in 1971 to cater to the academic needs of international students but it has grown into a bigger academic organisation with 36 institutions under its belt, spread across 17 campuses in and around Pune and outside Maharashtra. It was accorded a deemed university status in 2002.
Quota: Symbiosis follows a reservation policy for all special categories. This includes 15% quota for SC, 7.5% for ST, 3% for persons with disability, 5% for defence, 2% for Kashmiri migrants and 15% for management

IT: Last year, SIU launched Symbiosis Institute of Technology. Students from Maharashtra state education board or equivalent board, clearing their Class XII exam with minimum 50% aggregate score and 60% in physics, chemistry and mathematics, are considered for admission. An equal weightage is given to their score in either of the SET, AIEEE, JEE or MHT-CET. The intake is 240 seats

FERGUSSON
Fergusson was set up in 1884 by great nationalist Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The college, which has a NAAC ‘A’ grade, has consistently figured among the top 10 arts and science institutions in the country. It boasts a list of illustrious alumni, including two former PMs — P V Narasimha Rao and V P Singh —, former chief minister Babubhai Patel, barrister V N Gadgil, freedom fighter Veer Sawarkar, Acharya Kriplani and S M Joshi, among others.

BSc: 600 students for courses in computer science, microbiology, environmental science, electronic science, biotechnology and three vocational science courses. Arts: 240 seats. A bulk of these seats go to the Class XII passouts from Fergusson’s junior college unit. Last year, admissions closed at 85%.
BMCC
Also a NAAC ‘A’ grade institution, it has been identified by the UGC as a college with potential for excellence. It remains the first-choice for senior college commerce aspirants. Noted economist and former deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India D G Karve was the first principal of this college when it was established in 1943.

UNIVERSITY OF MUMBAIOVERVIEW
University of Mumbai (UoM) was among the 3 presidency universities — the other 2 in Calcutta and Madras — to be set up by the British in 1857. With a five-star rating from NAAC and the tag of University for Potential Excellence, it is one of the most modern varsities in the country. St Xavier’s College, which was affiliated in 1868, is the first of its colleges. The original campus in Fort in south Mumbai houses its administrative division. Another large campus is situated in Kalina, Santacruz where much of the land has been kept for development of future disciplines. Last year, the varsity established a centre of basic sciences. A centre for nano sciences and nano technology is under construction after the Centre set aside Rs 100 crore for the same. This year, a new course on slum studies and a programme in numismatic studies has been introduced

Commerce: The financial capital has highest number of commerce colleges. Apart from the vanilla BCom course, most top colleges like HR College of Commerce, N M College and Podar College offer specialised under-graduate programmes in banking and insurance, financial markets and accountancy and finance.
Science: A top science college that promotes the culture of research even in under-graduate education is The Institute of Science. It is here that moon rocks were analysed first in the 70s. For those wanting to pursue courses other than pure sciences, one can look at D G Ruparel College, Ruia College, Jai Hind College, SIES College and Sathaye College run professional programmes like BSc in biotechnology, computer sciences and microbiology
Humanities & Social Sciences:
The 140-year-old St Xavier’s College is where one should head. This institution has applied for academic autonomy and is may get it by the start of the coming academic year. Soon, a student will be able to pick and choose subjects across streams. The Heras Institute of the college boasts of some original artefacts and manuscripts and the Xaviers Institute of Social Research allows students to take a deep look at issues of social concern. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences also offers a host of short-term courses in gerontology, disaster preparedness and response, hospital administration
Law:
For those wanting to pursue law, the Govt Law College is a top class institution which has produced Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Dr B R Ambedkar, M C Chagla (the first Indian Chief Justice of the Bombay HC), N A Palkhiwala. Annual student intake is 160 seats and last year’s cut-off was 86%

Established in 1947, the University of Rajputana State was renamed Rajasthan University with the formation of Rajasthan state in 1956. This citadel of learning began its journey with four constituent colleges, four post-graduate departments & 2 centres of research. At present, it has 6 constituent colleges, 36 postgraduate departments, 17 centres & over 445 affiliated colleges in the state. The institution admits 22,000 students every year. Seventeen research centres have been established over a period of time to strengthen research in different fields. MAHARAJA COLLEGE
One of the oldest in north India, Maharaja College was established in 1844. It was built by Sawai Mansingh — the then king of Jaipur — for students of the Rajputana region. Maharaja College has been a prominent science college in the country and admits 2,500 students every year. It has a staff of 16 head of departments, 32 associate professors and 48 professors. The architect who designed the college building was called from Britain. The building remained unscathed and the majestic Kota sandstone structure eventually evolved into a centre of learning. Housing more than one lakh books, the college library has several century-old books related to science, arts, culture and history

MAHARANI COLLEGE
With 11 of its students having participated in the civil disobedience movement, this institution is a symbol of women empowerment. The institution started its voyage as an intermediate college in 1944 from the precincts of Madho Vilas, Jaipur. The college moved to its new spacious environs in July 1947, and was transformed into a major school of learning for girls since then. Today, it houses more than 6,000 girl students.
